VA: Rock Sessions Volume 4

as i didnt have too much time ripping new old vinyls for you, heres another issue of my rock sessions compilation series, and i hope you like it as much as i do.
many tracks on this album (not to forget about the cover art) again indicate that at the time i put it together i was in a manic deep purple-phase (sorry for that, but my later comps are less purple influenced). first of all we have another track by supergroup combo green bullfrog (see previous rock session volume for more info), a cover of art crudups my baby left me, earl jordan providing fantastic gruff and raunchy vocals. next, theres a track called rock star by an obscure hard rock / prog group named warpig, and even if youre not a deep purple fan yourself you might instantly recognize that this is basically their hit fireball just with different lyrics – BUT, the warpig track interestingly was released a year before (1971) purples great, fiery lp came out. i guess someday ill make a single post just about artists and songs from whom purple nicked their stuff because its quite a lot.
another “ear-catcher” …

VA: These Boots Were Made For Rockin’

this is a fairly new comp that i recently put together for my sister, who had never been in touch with music older than five or ten years, until last year she had been taken to a paul mccartney concert in cologne. since then she listens to the beatles all the time (which is much to my delight of course), and i made up this collection as an introduction to music from the fifties to early seventies for her. with the aim to include mostly stuff, to know which almost belongs to general knowledge. i searched through my whole (!) digital archive (which is a lot larger than my vinyl collection) which took me two weeks; and to make a selection of “only” 120 tracks was really hard, as almost everything seemed to be important. i may have forgotten or even sorted out many songs that were important to you perhaps, or that you would have added instead of some others rather, but all in all i think i created as much of a representative overview of twenty years of pop history as fits into 120 tracks. comments and also (serious) criticism are highly appreciated, maybe for a …

VA: Rock Sessions Volume 3

here comes volume 3 of my very first set of compilations, put together some years ago. perhaps the most interesting feature of this volume is the cover art – looks familiar, huh? yes its the whos tommy again, which i also used for the header of this blog. i cant help but just love that artwork, i dont know why, its just so incredibly fascinating… the guys in the foreground of course are the who, in the background you can see deep purple on the right, alvin lee from ten years after on the left, and the british psych-pop group the smoke (not to be confused with the american group with the same name) at the bottom. their biggest hit was the acid-drenched drug-anthem my friend jack, which was featured on the previous volume. on this volume however we have a more tame, and lets say, neat number of theirs, the cute pop ballad wake up cherylina which is all about the ending of carefree childhood days and the changing of relationships connected to that. the singer reminds young cherylina that she now is a woman (and no longer a little girl) – perhaps because he now wants …

VA: Rock Sessions Volume 2

as a kick-off for some nice posts for which ill hopefully have time tomorrow, heres volume 2 of my old mixed-genre overall-60s-70s comp. click here to go to the first volume.

this volume is mostly made up of popular tracks about which theres not a lot to be said anymore, so ill just name the few specialities on here. first there is track no 7 which is not that well-known, plynth by the jeff beck group, that included aside jeff beck rod stewart as the vocalist and nicky hopkins on keyboard/piano, aynsley dunbar on drums, and the lately somewhat disgraced ron wood. although it had even been an a-side in 1969 other numbers from their repertoire, like jailhouse rock or all shook up, gained a lot more attention – i at least first heard this track when i got the whole beck ola album and listened to it. i must mention some of the classic evergreens, too, these are for instance my friend jack by the smoke and rock me by steppenwolf. my friend jack is a hell of a fuzzed out uk psych monster, and a lot of you will be familiar with it, …

VA: Rock Sessions Volume 1

this is the first part of a compilation i put together for a friend about two years ago (please dont mind the silly title, it was just a working title when i couldnt think of anything better, but i missed the chance to change it before i made the covers for all the volumes). it has 15 volumes in total which i will post as a series every one or two weeks. as my music collection wasnt that elaborate yet back then it features mostly popular stuff from the good old days but no real obscurities, with some exceptions maybe that will be granted the one or other comment. as i spent a lot of time creating a selfmade cover for each of the 15 volumes i made, i thought it could be worth nonetheless to post them here. if you already have all the music (which is more than likely) you probably can make use of my coverart, otherwise you can use it perfectly as an introduction to the great music era of the 60s and early 70s.

now about this volume: you will instantly recognize the cover of kings crimsons 69 master piece …
