R.I.P. Ravi Shankar, the great sitar maestro

Ravi Shankar (born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury)

7th April 1920 – 11th December 2012

it was yesterday that we lost the man who initially brought the sitar into western, and especially into psychedelic music. the man who influenced the music of the 1960s and afterwards, notably that of the beatles, like no other.
ravi shankar reached the biblical age of 92 years, but his musical heritage will live on many times his lifespan.

read about his passing here.

Happy 70th Birthday, Sir Paul!

Today we congratulate a man who, accompanied by three comrades, shaped the musical world of the Sixties like almost nobody else and has been inspiring young and old till this day as one of the last remaining relics of that time. Together with his arguably coequal partner John Lennon, he created the songs that fascinated and thrilled an entire generation and made mass hysteria a general phenomenon. Whereas Lennon was more of a rascal who used cunning lyrics full of puns and cheeky ways of playing to write the more unpolished and stirring material of the Fab Four, the unmatched feeling for melodies and sophisticated, catchy harmonies of today’s birthday child helped to create the elegant and euphonious counterpart to Lennon’s work, which made the Beatles become the exciting song machine that they were. Last but not least, he caused a dramatic turning point in the musical history of the Beatles, if not of the entire Sixties music scene, by conceptualising the album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band which was worked out almost exclusively by himself. Today we say “Thank You” for the music that came to stay and his contributions to the history of music in its entirety …

50 Years Ago Today

Stu is quite the iconic figure in the Beatles community and is famous for being a member of the greatest rock band in the world. This makes it quite a hardship to understand what a special person he must’ve been. The stories tell how John Lennon always admired him, seeing in him the creativity that them as artsts must’ve been a bond. When I look at his early paintings I can see the same ambition that led him jump on the bandwagon, offering him adventure unknowns musings and whatnot there, in Hamburg.

double exposure, astrids work
When the pretty boy stood on stages of those rotten environments, he was barely able to handle his instrument but took the task nevertheless, probably out of love for John and open to new experiences.

Love found it’s new ways and soon he was to meet a German photographer lady, which made him abandon (or even, liberate him from) his band, giving both the band and himself the chance of self-realisation and well.. making it. He got accepted at the Hamburg art school and the band released “My Bonnie”. Shortly after this, he passed.

It’s Been a Long Long Long Time…

yes, 58 years can be a long, long, long time – but not as a lifetime. the mixed feelings of grief that occupied me these days were caused on one side by the fact that its once again the anniversary of the loss of a great idol, and on the other side by the horrid fact how irreversably fast time flies. yes, it is exactly ten years ago today that george harrison passed away. to me this was a very incisive and dramatic event – first, because it was the first (and to this day – luckily – only) death of a beatle to happen in my lifetime, and second because my grandfather died just a couple of days later in early december 2001 from the same illness that george succumbed to (although he was lucky enough to reach a little higher age).
as an atheist i probably disagree with george or many of his fans that he is “in a better place” now (even if this should be being reborn or what else one can think of), i simply say lets thing of the awesome life this lad has had – a life many of will …

Cilla Black: Anyone Who Had A Heart / Just For You (1964)

here we have another cute girl pop number, this time from the other side of the big pond. cilla black was born priscilla white in liverpool 1943, and was the first (and only) female musician to sign a contract with the beatles’ manager brian epstein. funny enough she picked up ‘black’ as her stage name after the editor of the local music newspaper ‘mersey beat’ wrote about her with that name by mistake. ‘anyone who had a heart’ was her first #1 hit and her big breakthrough, after her first single ‘love of the loved’ (a lennon/mccartney song) only made it to #35 in the UK. it is a sweet and touching ballad about unreturned love, which becomes even more touching by cillas incredibly rich and powerful voice. when you first listen to this, the first impression that hits you might not even be the beauty of the song itself but rather the overwhelming realisation of ‘wow that girl can SING!’. cillas marvelous vocals are accompanied by some orchestration and a background choir, which makes the whole arrangement more sweet and soulful. awww, this is another number i just cant stop listening to! the b-side, however, is far …

Arf, Arf, He Goes, a Merry Sight

i assume that most of you know what happened today – exactly thirty years ago. after celebrating john lennons 70th birthday in october, this year we also have to take into account that he is already gone for three decades now.
i will not say much about him and his death now – if youre interested in the historical details, visit wikipedia. if you want to read some pathetic obituary, visit some other site. lets just let the artist speak for himself, with one of his poems that i count among my very favourites. of course it is a sad poem, because december 8th is a sad day, about a dog who was decided to cease his happy and humble existence. it feels awkward to think about the bitter irony in this – the irony about who really was the dog, being put to sleep some 16 years later…

John Lennon: Good Dog Nigel
(In His Own Write, 1964)

Arf, Arf, he goes, a merry sight,
Our little hairy friend,
Arf, Arf, upon the lampost bright
Arfing round the bend.
Nice dog! Goo boy,
Waggie …

Mighty Morris Ten!

look at that cool guy in his cool chequered pants… its his 65th birthday today!!! did you recognize him? yep, it is roger glover, bassist of deep purple (first in mk II and also in the current line-up), and early band mate of ian gillan. they had been in the pop/rock/mod band episode six, of which glover was a founding member and for which he wrote several songs (among them: thats all i want, mighty morris ten, sunshine girl (on this one he is also singing!!), when i fall in love, wide smiles, mr universe). at one point he told his friend ian gillan, who first was very reluctant in songwriting, that he would not talk to him again until he had written a song. well, it seems like it worked – but nevertheless glovers creative input has proved to be essential for deep purples success in rock history.

however, roger glover is not the only one celebrating today. it is also the 66th birthday of ten years after bassist leo lyons, woodstock hero and on the road for almost fifty years. happy birthday!
catching up with other events, on saturday it was the …

Happy Birthday, Large John Saliver…

everyone knows this guy, even people who perhaps havent heard of the beatles (how impossible that may ever seem) may have heard of john lennon. its his 70th birthday today (or would be, as everyone very well knows as well hes no longer with us), the birthday of a musician, a beatle of course, but also a rebel, a philosopher, artist, avantgardist, revolutionist, demolitionist, political critic, social critic, critic of everything, self-denier, egocentric, poet, writer, sound creator, song inventor, mad-mind and genius… just ask yourself: what can you think of that he wasnt?
he never really was the neat pop crooner that he appeared like when beatlemania began and the hearts of millions of little girls sighed for him. perhaps he never even really was a beatle, when his teenage hunger for rock n roll and freedom of mind, that first had driven him to music, once again pushed him forward to pursue – more. not only self-realization in a different kind than the beatles provided him, but turning his inside longing for peace within his mind to the outside, and together with his soulmate and second half protesting against war – in a non-violent way that …

The Beatles: Bravo Magazine Starschnitt Part 43 & 44 of 44

HERES WHAT YOU ALL ‘VE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! the two final parts of the beatles starschnitt, which started in the humble beginnings of this blog, last december.
to celebrate this and to catch up with last week, here are both parts in a single post. again i must apologize for the delay and for the long silence on tfr, but many things are happening right now, private as well as job-related. nothing bad or stressful, but just too many changes at a time. theres a big exam for me to take at the end of this month; when its done posts will be more regular again.

i hope you enjoyed the starschnitt series, either to refresh beloved memories from the good ol times, or to discover new stuff from “back then”. as this is the only music-related starschnitt (and the only complete one) that i have, the BRAVO-series will end here. im already thinking of a new project to post in parallel to the vinyl records, but nothing will be revealed yet at this point.
to those who downloaded and perhaps printed out all the puzzle-parts, if you put them together and …

The Beatles: Bravo Magazine Starschnitt Part 40 of 44

sorry for the delay, but here finally is part 40 of the bravo beatles starschnitt. the front page again is not very exciting this time, but the back page again is and example of the humble state in which female emancipation somehow still was at the time. here again we have readers contest in which girls could win a make-up set – and boys could win a cassette recorder (!!!), which of course in 1966 was about a million times more valuable for any teen than make-up or similar products. well at least id have preferred to be a boy if i had won this contest!
